The National - "I Should Live in Salt"
The National, a classy indie-rock band from The United States of America... I won't say much, but I really like the lead singer's voice. On their Wikipedia page it says that he writes their lyrics and is a baritone. So I guess that's a pretty big deal or something (?). Their music is often characterized as dark and difficult to interpret, so I won't attempt too much. But apparently this song is about the lead singer's little brother. Also I really dig the unique beat of the song, and how it plays with the synchopation (reminds me of an Arcade Fire song)...
The lyrics:
Don't make me read your mind
You should know me better than that
It takes me too much time
You should know me better than that
You're not that much like me
You should know me better than that
We have different enemies
You should know me better than that
I should leave it alone but you're not right
I should leave it alone but you're not right
Can't you write it on the wall?
You should know me better than that
There's no room to write it all
You should know me better than that
Can you turn the TV down?
You should know me better than that
There's too much crying in the sound
I should know you better than that
I should leave it alone but you're not right
I should leave it alone but you're not right
I should live in salt for leaving you behind
Behind
Think about something so much
You should know me better than that
Start to slide out of touch
You should know me better than that
Tell yourself it's all you know
You should know me better than that
Learn to appreciate the void
You should know me better than that
I should live in salt for leaving you behind
Behind
I should live in salt for leaving you behind
Behind
I should live in salt for leaving you behind
Behind
You should know me better than that
It takes me too much time
You should know me better than that
You're not that much like me
You should know me better than that
We have different enemies
You should know me better than that
I should leave it alone but you're not right
I should leave it alone but you're not right
Can't you write it on the wall?
You should know me better than that
There's no room to write it all
You should know me better than that
Can you turn the TV down?
You should know me better than that
There's too much crying in the sound
I should know you better than that
I should leave it alone but you're not right
I should leave it alone but you're not right
I should live in salt for leaving you behind
Behind
Think about something so much
You should know me better than that
Start to slide out of touch
You should know me better than that
Tell yourself it's all you know
You should know me better than that
Learn to appreciate the void
You should know me better than that
I should live in salt for leaving you behind
Behind
I should live in salt for leaving you behind
Behind
I should live in salt for leaving you behind
Behind
I will be seeing The National (along with Bastille, John Newman, Tom Odell, The 1975, and others)at the Summer Well Music Festival. I'm very excited to get this opportunity to enjoy quality LIVE music in a field with 15,000 other people. I'm greatly looking forward to the experiences and stories I'll have for later.
Is it a reference to Lot's wife? What is the story of his little brother?
